Courses Offered

Third-Year Clerkships

The Neurosurgery Department’s third-year elective (COURSE #: SUR-MD 837) consists of two weeks, taken during the General Surgery rotation/elective time block.  We can accommodate up to two third-year University of Kentucky medical students per each two-week-block rotation.  While exploring a general exposure to neurosurgical disorders, tailoring the experience for each student is provided, whenever possible.  Each week consists of rounds, operating room and emergency room experiences, as well as clinic, and didactic small-group sessions. Required team lectures are scheduled Thursdays 8-11 (Grand Rounds, M&M, Journal Club, Neuropathology, Neuroradiology, etc), with smaller group lectures 11-1 (topics vary).  A reference book, Greenberg’s Handbook of Neurosurgery, is provided for loan for each rotation, and a full medical center library is available adjacent to the Neurosurgery departmental offices.  Students will meet with the Neurosurgery Clerkship Director periodically to assess progress.  Grading is honors/pass/fail.   For further course details, please contact  Margret Kates in the Department of General Surgery at mlkate@uky.edu.

Fourth-year Clerkships (Acting Internships & Sub-Internships)

The Neurosurgery Department’s fourth-year elective (Course #: NSG 864)  consists of four weeks.  We can accommodate up to two fourth-year medical students per each four-week-block rotation.   Medical students from UK or from other US LCME-accredited schools may apply. Each fourth-year student will be expected to demonstrate abilities at the level of a PG1 on this rotation, given responsibilities commensurate with abilities, while ensuring appropriate guidance to maximize education and patient safety. Additionally, each student will provide a 30-minute topic presentation to the Department, with time for Q&A.  Since the number of students rotating is so small, each has exposure to our faculty and residents in a very individualized way; while exploring a general exposure to neurosurgical disorders, tailoring the experience for each student is provided, whenever possible.  Grading is A-F.   For further course details, please contact Stacey Sindelar at sthomps@uky.edu.
